why isn’t Sticks'n'Sushi CO2-neutral?

Certain companies suddenly turn CO2-neutral. They buy CO2 quotas to match their CO2 emissions. At Sticks'n'Sushi we would certainly also like to be CO2-neutral. But behind this inviting label, we discovered a more complex reality.

Electricity production and consumption in Denmark are subject to the EU quota system. Despite the good intentions of this system, we have our doubts that CO2 neutrality through this system is worth much. This is primarily due to the numerous loopholes inherent in the current quota system. Likewise, we believe that there are simply too many quotas on the market in order for the market mechanisms to work properly. In a matter of speaking, the EU is just too CO2 friendly.
In our view, a company's own CO2 production is only part of the equation. To deserve the designation as a CO2-neutral company, the emissions a company is indirectly responsible for - those of its suppliers and consumers - must be considered as well. Therefore, we believe that achieving CO2-neutrality through the purchase of quotas for one's electricity consumption is too good to be true. Click here to read more about our use of CO2 quotas.

"We know that we still have a long way to go and why we don't want to indicate the opposite."

We believe that being frank about the magnitude of this challenge inspires far more action and that being optimistic about facing the challenge inspires everybody to join the journey. That way you don't insinuate any easy solutions. To pretend that the challenges of sustainability can be fixed by a click of a mouse is to gamble with all the people, animals and plants that today's unsustainable lifestyles are harming.

Furthermore, in our opinion the idea of CO2-neutrality over-emphasizes the climate aspect, and thus clouds over many other important aspects of sustainability challenges. A sustainable way of life is not reached solely by stabilizing our emissions of CO2 and other greenhouse gases at an acceptable level. We still have to learn not to exhaust other renewable or non-renewable resources, such as water, forests, metals, etc. Moreover, sustainability is also about humans. Fighting poverty and respecting human rights and employee rights are all important things we need to act upon.

"We have embarked on a mission we'll never complete. But every day and in all we do, we will work towards that end."

That being said, we do all we can to reduce our direct and indirect emissions of greenhouse gases. Among other we buy CO2-neutral electricity and help finance the expansion of renewable energy sources. Reducing the emissions of CO2 and other greenhouse gases is a central part of Sushi Stainable.

At Sticks'n'Sushi we wish to contribute to a societal shift towards a sustainable way of living on this earth.

We have embarked on a mission we'll never complete. But every day and in all we do, we will work towards that end. So we are not CO2-neutral yet, but someday we might be…
